If your goal is to ride for several consecutive days, Tuscan, Chianti and neighboring regions are optimal places to go. Villages are scattered on each hilltop as far as the eye can see. You could stop at one for breakfast, one for a great salad and dinner late in the evening or while you enjoy the sun setting over the vineyards rolling fields.

I would suggest staying at one of the many local villages, such as Montalchino or Vagliagli and go on to another the next day. They are quite beautiful. Each village is different with a very distinct character yet the same in other ways as they were all built of stone of many colors, of the same soil from the earth a thousand years ago.

Round-trip off-season immediately following the winter sports season last year was under $520 per person. Staying overnight can be under $150 per person for a 4 or 5 day commitment at a vineyard resort. There are many resorts from which to choose. I have gone to Europe more than once for equal the price of a trip from the East Coast to the Rockies in the Western United States. It is quite a bit less from Central Europe as it’s just a train or car ride to your starting destination. Some of the villages also offer road bike rentals for a reasonable fee. Bring your helmet, bike shoes and pedal clips, pack light and enjoy!

If you have a great experience and recommendations for a road biking trip that you would like to share, please send it to us. Include a map or bike route.
